Finding the right work / life balance in your salon business

By Katie Godfrey on March 23rd, 2023

Katie Godfrey is a successful beauty entrepreneur juggling life as a working mum with multiple businesses. Who could be better to explore the tightrope of work/life balance!

Is there even such thing as a work life balance? Many of us would disagree as we feel like we’re always working! But you can factor this into your life. You just need to be strict with your time…

When we first start in business it feels like all we do is work, which is why only 5% of businesses survive. It is hard. Most people give up. I remember when I first opened my salon, I would work all hours; I would divert the salon phone to my mobile so I would never miss a call. I would open early or stay open later just to get that client in that can’t make our opening hours.

The business soon started running me! I was trapped and felt like all I did was work – when this happens over time you start resenting the business.

If you’re reading this and feeling exactly that, you can change things. I did. I stepped out of my salon, so I was able to work on the business. I did this when I was a few months pregnant as I had no choice. If I didn’t then my business would stop completely as I was the driving force behind it. I successfully did this and then realised there is such thing as a work/life balance.

Don’t get me wrong, I still work a lot. But that is completely my choice. I would rather do some marketing than watch Netflix. Instead, I have created the work/life balance that suits MY life. I like working Monday – Thursday and most of the time they’re long hours as I’m running multiple companies now. I will then have Friday-Sunday off with zero work, and every half term and summer holidays off with my kids. If you work that out, that’s a lot of time off.
For me, that’s my work/life balance.

So, I want you to think:

  • What hours are you working now?
  • What’s days do you have off where you are committed to zero work?
  • Are you happy with that balance or do you need to make changes?

Only you can make your business work for you. The best thing to do is remember WHY you started that business in the first place.

Feel free to reach out if you want to figure out how you can have more of a work/life balance. Regardless of if you are a salon owner or a solo therapist this CAN work!
