Creative skills for your beauty, hair or holistic business: Intro

We’ll be bringing you a series of blogs to help you hone your creative skills to showcase your business effectively. Our first season’s topic is about design and will expand on the essential elements a business needs to be successful in a digital age.

Here’s a walkthrough of what to expect…



You have a personality. Your friends have a personality. Even your car has a personality – that’s why you chose that model, so why shouldn’t your brand? You’ll attract more people when you show off your brand’s personality. Usually, our brands reflect ourselves. We will project the things we like into our work to make it authentic. What if every therapist or hairdresser used the same tone of voice or the same brand colours?


Consistency is key. We’ve all heard that a hundred times. But what does it take? What resources are out there to help us keep it up? Why is it so important?


It comes naturally for some of us and there are different types of composition. You may be better with one than with another. For example, the design is one, photography is another. You may be better at placing objects than capturing them – or you may have a gift for both!

The second in the series will focus on social media

Marketing yourself

Doing your market research, choosing the right demographics and building those connections with your loyal customers play a big part in your path to success.


Advertising isn’t always easy. Not only do you need some good material to work with but you have to reflect your business while drawing people in. However, advertising isn’t entirely an online initiative. In this digital age, we sometimes forget there are free and simple ways of doing this, like simply spreading the word. It’s just that we’re so engrossed in the digital world that we are more likely to see an advert on a screen than other sources.


There are lots of tools we can use. My personal favourites are Preview and Hopper. Facebook has a built-in tool you can use. So spend a bit of time instead of worrying about posting everyday as most days you have a million other things to do! You don’t want to feel like It’s just work, work, work!

The third in the series will talk about photography skills.

Using what you’ve got
What device do you have or do you have a budget to spend on a camera? Either way, even if you have an older phone, you can still get that professional looking photo if you do it right.


The first thing you learn in photography is how to use a pinhole camera. This teaches you how light works in photography. To take a photo, you don’t need a fancy lens or 20px camera. You need light. So actually the most important things you need are natural daylight or a ring light, especially when photographing your work. You want it to look as good as it does in real life!


We refer to composition in design and composition applies to photography in the same way except that the elements have changed. You want to place things in the right position. However, in photography you have more to think about. You have to worry about the lighting and whether or not the subject is working well with the camera.

And the final blog will focus on editing using apps and software

Amateur to professional

There are SO many apps available nowadays. My favourite is Adobes Lightroom mobile version. Why? IT’S FREE!!! There is a paid version with a few more tools but you don’t really need them.
