Karine Jackson’s tips for salons during Plastic-Free July

Karine Jackson from KJ Sustainability Consultancy has been a pioneer for sustainability in hairdressing for over 20 years when she first started using organic colour – she’s subsequently featured everywhere from the hair press to the One Show and Woman’s Hour and worked with the likes of journalist and author of Turning The Tide On Plastic, Lucy Siegle. Karine was the first London salon to go single use plastic free, which she started by doing a plastic audit – collecting together all of the single use plastic that came into her salon over the course of a month and then writing to or changing suppliers to bring it to a minimum. Spoiler alert – it had taken over her office within a week, she didn’t need to wait a month to see just how much was coming in! She gives us her tips for Plastic Free July.

Karine is the owner of Karine Jackson Sustainable Hair which she opened in 2003, following an outstanding career to date that started at her parents’ salon in Wollongong, Australia through to being an award-winning manager at Charles Worthington’s Covent Garden Salon. Owning her own business has given Karine the opportunity to run a salon according to her own ethos and values of which sustainability and caring about climate change is a large part.
