7 natural herbs and supplements to boost your workday energy

By Pukka Herbs on May 24th, 2022

Salon owners, barbers and stylists tend to spend all day on their feet and working with their hands, so it’s important that they properly fuel their bodies to prevent fatigue and burnout. Jo Webber, Herbal Education Lead at Pukka Herbs, shares some of the best energising natural herbs and supplements to enliven your body and mind during a busy workday. Working in a salon is exciting, dynamic and often, no two days are the same. Not only this, but having a physical role like a barber or beauty technician can also keep you more active and ultimately fitter than sedentary jobs like working in an office. However, it’s easy to get overtired and burned out in the salon industry, so looking after yourself should always be a priority. As well as crucial things like eating a fulfilling, balanced and colourful diet full of fruit and vegetables and ensuring you get enough sleep, there are some other natural ways to feel stronger and more alert throughout the day. So, next time you feel tired out at work, ditch the coffee and try these herbs and supplements to enjoy a boost in energy without the caffeine crash later on.

Green tea

Now one of the most popular herbal drinks in the world, green tea has been grown in China and across the rest of East Asia for centuries. Celebrated for its high level of antioxidants, anti-inflammatory properties and its soothing impact on digestion, green tea can also help you feel invigorated and awake. This is because it contains a moderate amount of caffeine, which works alongside an amino acid called L-theanine to aid proper brain function (Journal of Nutrition). However, this caffeine content is much lower than coffee or other artificial energy drinks, meaning that green tea’s energy release is more moderate and you won’t experience those post-coffee jitters. It can also help to regulate and prevent spikes in blood sugar levels, making it the perfect tea for early mornings or during an afternoon dip in energy.

Matcha is a special form of powdered green tea and — as it uses the whole leaf — has even higher levels of antioxidants, chlorophyll and L-theanine (Medical News Today). Despite containing more caffeine than green tea, matcha provides more moderate, slow-release energy than a cup of coffee. Combining whisked matcha powder with oat or almond milk (and an optional squeeze of agave syrup) therefore makes a great, nourishing alternative to your usual latte.

Used in traditional medicine throughout history, this plant root is well-documented for its ability to fight fatigue and sharpen cognitive function (Medical News Today). In fact, studies into chronic fatigue found that ginseng had a significant impact on increasing energy levels and physical performance (PubMed). Whether you take your ginseng as a herbal tea or a soluble supplement, this herb blends particularly well with green tea, ginger, and lemongrass.

This member of the nightshade family has been used as a traditional tonic for centuries. Ashwagandha is an adaptogen, meaning it can help to counter the effects of stress and fatigue on the body and help us better respond to the fast pace of modern life. As well as regulating our key stress hormones such as cortisol and alleviating anxiety, supplements containing this wonder herb can also help maintain our stamina and endurance during particularly busy days (Cleveland Clinic).

Gotu kola

Gotu Kola (Centella asiatica) a staple herb in Chinese and Ayurvedic medicine. Credited with being a brain-friendly supplement, studies have found that supplementing Gotu Kola can help to improve working memory and alertness, reduce mental fatigue and ease anxiety (PubMed). This herb also has the potential to improve skin quality, which can be particularly beneficial if you suffer from skin conditions like eczema or acne that is exacerbated by stress. Starting the morning with a Gotu Kola-based supplement can therefore help you feel more focused and ready to take on the day.

High in potent antioxidants and anti-inflammatory substances like curcumin, turmeric is a fantastic herb to add to your weekly work routine. Whether you cook with it, drink herbal tea infusions, or take it in the form of natural, organic supplements, turmeric can play a major role in supporting muscles and joints after a day of physical movement, as well as removing free radicals from the blood and reducing oxidative stress (Everyday Health). Especially if you’ve been on your feet all day in the salon, herbs like turmeric that aid circulation and repair can therefore be incredibly useful.

Brahmi (also known as bacopa monnieri extract) grows in marshland throughout South Asia. Often used to treat insomnia and anxiety, brahmi has also been found to aid cognitive function by accelerating our reaction time and decision-making (Science Direct). When juggling different clients, employees and various tasks throughout the day, natural supplements containing brahmi can therefore provide you with some much-needed clarity and mental focus during a busy workday.

The salon industry is exciting and fast-paced, but it can also be physically tiring. If you’re on your feet all day, incorporating these natural herbs and supplements into your diet can help you feel more energised and focused throughout the working week.
