How to compile a winning hair/ beauty award entry

By Sally Learmouth on March 15th, 2024

It’s that time of year again when many of the key hair and beauty awards are open to enter – will you take the plunge? We get asked about awards a lot here at Gloss and as we’ve written hundreds of finalist and winning entries over the years, we’ve got a few helpful hints to help you to succeed.

Choose what suits you best

Be honest with yourself, if your business is mediocre but ticks over nicely for you, then you’re running a successful business but it’s probably not going to win an award for business ideas or innovation. However, if your customer service is second to none and you’re absolutely killing it on client retention with an above industry average figure, you have yourself an angle! Equally, it might be that colour is your passion, or you’re a stand out precision cutter, in which case find those awards that resonate with your creativity and enter those instead. Think about whether the category is something you’ll be able to promote to the benefit of your business as well should you become a finalist or win – don’t enter anything with a title that won’t attract the clients you want.

Start early!

The sooner you get started the better, award entries aren’t something you should try and knock out a couple of days before the deadline. If you start a couple of months ahead then you have time to fix any potential holes in your entry. For example, if it asks for press cuttings and you don’t have any, this gives you time to try and secure some column inches. It might ask for some in depth financial figures that need research, or you might realise you’ve fallen short on something like your customer journey training. Knowing what the criteria asks for in advance gives you the chance to ensure you’ve got everything in order.

Be thorough, but don’t waffle

Your passion should shine through and you should be able to give examples to reinforce your assertions. Read the criteria closely to make sure you understand what it’s asking for and then answer every element. Don’t exceed the word count, it’s there for a reason.

If you don’t get through, don’t be disappointed

Becoming a finalist is hugely competitive, you can be up against hundreds of entrants from all over the country for as little as 3 places sometimes. Ask if it’s possible to get feedback as some awards will pass this on and use it as a learning experience. Even putting an award entry together can be really positive for your business as it puts a spotlight on specific areas and can organically help to reveal where you could be putting more focus.

If you are a finalist, shout it from the rooftops!

Put it on your website, socials, signature, window, advertising, salon talkers – it’s a big deal!
