As a hair and beauty professional for over 25 years, I have been well aware of how we, as pros are constantly meeting new people and taking care of our clients’ needs, making them feel and look amazing. But, quite often, the demands of the job can get very overwhelming, causing anxiety and stress, leaving us feeling flat and lacking in enthusiasm.
But you don’t have to suffer in silence! Managing anxiety personally and professionally and putting preventative measures in place is crucial. But firstly, it is important to be aware and recognise staff who are struggling and learning how to support them. The key factor is to try and understand how to avoid it in the first place and as a business owner it’s critical to also take care of yourself.
Through my own personal experiences of going through anxiety and depression, I realised I had to do something drastic to improve my life, so I learned to implement a different mindset to enable me to control my thoughts and improve my own self development, both at home and now in my business Deeper Connections as a Mindset and Self Development Coach.
Sometimes when we are listening to the stresses and worries of our clients and they are offloading on us, quite frequently and unknowingly it can stay with you in your subconscious mind and bring your own energy levels down. On some occasions, it can even leave you feeling depleted, anxious and stressed. Keeping our own mindset positive and our energy levels on a good even keel is crucial for our own mental wellbeing too.
There are a few simple steps you can implement into the workplace for yourself and your employees to improve the general wellbeing and increase productivity.
- Take regular breaks. It is so important to take breaks in between clients to relax and take a short walk outside for some fresh air. We all know how the salon can get stuffy sometimes with the constant droning of hairdryers and chemical smells.
- Take five minutes to practice some deep breathing exercises. Amazingly, this simple technique can help to reduce anxiety and stress and help calm the mind.
- Ensure there is an open line of communication between yourself and all your staff and encourage them to speak out if they recognise that they need some sort of help mentally.
- Play some background music that is upbeat to encourage relaxation and help to improve the working environment.
- Talk to your staff regularly about putting effective time management plans in place to take pressure off them. For example, use an automated booking system that sends reminders to your clients to reduce no shows and cancellations.
- Reward yourself as a business owner. Have a Spa Day with friends occasionally or a night out with someone who lifts your spirits and makes you laugh! Don’t feel guilty about having a day off and doing something for you!
Being a hairdresser and a salon owner can be one of the most stressful careers, but if you can create a happy and supportive workplace, it can also be the best and most rewarding job in the world!
