It is absolutely vital that the wedding day runs smoothly and on time, and you, as the MUA, will play a huge part in this! The timeline is one of the most important aspects of the wedding day. It allows everyone to know what’s going on, where they need to be and at what time. The MUA should create this in advance of the Big Day itself and it will need to be reviewed by the bride and sometimes even the photographer, as you will need to work around each other on the day.
When creating the timeline, work backwards beginning with the time the bride wants to be in her dress. This will usually be the time the photographer/videographers will want to shoot her final look. More often than not, they will also want to shoot the bridesmaids too, so make sure EVERYONE is good to go! Unless the bride requests otherwise, suggest she goes second before last which will allow her ample time at the end, to get into her dress and compose herself without clock watching which will make her nervous!

Towards the ready time, the bridal suite will become rather frantic! There will be all manner of people coming in and out of the room whether it’s florists asking the bride to check over the bouquets, the wedding planner with last minute approvals, or the photographer literally in your face! This can all be very distracting for you as well as the bride, so you will need to negotiate all of this whilst keeping a sense of peace and calm, as you finish up what you are there to do.
You meet all types of people whilst doing weddings and more often than not, everyone is really lovely, happy and excited for the day. However, on some occasions this may not be the case. You will need to have the tenacity to deal with tricky situations or people as they arise, with a certain sense of panache. You really need to be a ‘people person’ to be a Bridal Makeup Artist. I’ve lost track of the number of times I’ve had to subtly guide the bridesmaids to go and get dressed as they are stressing out the bride, or listen diligently to an overbearing mother and her demands. If you can keep the bride calm when everything around her is elevating the stress level, she will be forever grateful.
TOP TIP: Create a playlist on your phone that consists of chilled out music. This is a great way to keep the room and your bride calm when the nerves step up a notch!
