International MUA, model and educator Jennifer Jane shares her top tips on how to choose the right makeup course for you.
1. Plan your career and choose your makeup course accordingly
If it’s bridal you want to specialise in, there’s no need to spend thousands of pounds on a full-blown makeup course that includes everything from SFX to body painting. If you have a clear idea of where you want to get to from the beginning, focusing in on that will make finding a course a lot easier.
2. Research the expertise of the trainers
The experience of the tutors should play a huge part in your decision making. Check how many years they have been in the industry, the quality of their work and see what previous students have to say about them. At the Bridal Makeup Academy we specialise in teaching the art of beautiful bridal makeup, having had over 12 years of experience doing exactly that. Make sure that you are in the hands of experienced professionals.
3. Support beyond the course
Learning makeup can be a fun but daunting experience. But what happens once it’s all over? A good makeup school should offer ongoing support to students and happily give advice on how to gain work, portfolio development and marketing etc. Most schools will have a Facebook community where you can share thoughts and ideas and chat to like-minded individuals.
4. Accredited certifications
While it is not compulsory to attend an accredited course it will give you more credibility in the marketplace. It will also help when you want to find insurance and get makeup artist discounts on products and equipment. An accredited course has also gone through rigorous checks as part of the certification process, so you can be assured you are buying a quality course.
5. Flexibility of learning
It can sometimes be a challenge to dedicate time to a new career path, especially if you are currently in work or tending to a young family. Finding a course that will fit in with you and your busy lifestyle should be a top priority. Is the course offered in other areas across the country or just from one city? Can any of the course be accessed online or does it all need to be in person learning? At the Bridal Makeup Academy we offer a fully accredited 3 day face to face course so you can really get to grips with the art of makeup application, then an online element that can be consumed at your own pace from wherever you choose, making it a truly flexible experience.
