Why Earth Month is more important now than ever

Gina Conway is a salon owner and ambassador for Green Salon Collective, and has won a Marie Claire award for Best Sustainable Salon. As a passionate advocate for the environment, we quizzed her on why she marks Earth Month at her salon.

My mom always told me to leave the world a better place than I found it, and that’s advice I live by today. Like most hairstylists, I LOVE to make people feel good, I call our team daymakers because that’s what we do! But as an energy heavy industry that uses copious amounts of electricity and water, as well as potentially putting chemicals into the water, we have to be particularly vigilant when it comes to environmental responsibility.

Earth Month is a reminder to ourselves and our clients that we can always do better! Another of my mom’s beautiful sayings is that ‘the world is changed by your example, not by your opinion.’ So for Earth Month, we’re taking part in a number of Aveda-led activities, including #nowashday on Earth Day, April 22. Aveda has partnered with @charitywater to raise awareness of the 703 million people who lack access to clean water daily, and as a team we’re all contributing by offering haircuts, facials and massages in exchange for donations, which will go in full to Charity: Water.

#nowashday will encourage people to skip a wash, which saves an average 6 gallons of water. We’ll be showing people how to work those second and third day styles with videos on social and to our mailing list, so that people do feel empowered to skip a wash more regularly by knowing how to restyle. Of course, we have the products for them to do it with – and Aveda are donating to the charity for every botanical repair strengthening overnight serum sold.

We’ll also be joining #AvedaWalksForWater, walking the 3.7 miles, the average distance people walk to access water globally, to raise money. We intend to make it fun of course, we love a team bonding exercise! But it’s a good reminder of what others have to do out of necessity.

It’s easy to think that we have water on tap here in the UK, and that what we do has no effect, but the reality is that the world is on the brink of an environmental crisis. This is why we also partner with Green Salon Collective, as we know we’re maximising our recycling and working towards zero to landfill. Did you know more than 98% of UK salon metals aren’t recycled? And foil takes up to 500 years to break down in landfill? And chemicals can leach from colour tubes into soil and water? 98% – it’s absolutely astonishing – we simply cannot do this to our earth.

So, if you feel inspired and want to join us this Earth Month, you can sign up or just make a donation, every pound counts. Drop us a message on social to find out more, @ginaconwaysalonandspa
