What’s the difference between strip, peelable and roller waxes?

Tracey Smith is a highly regarded veteran of the spa and beauty industry, who founded Ashmira Botanica in 2016. With two distinct focuses: Wax & Skincare, the premium wax has revolutionised the UK beauty market with over 800 avid spa and salon partners already in love with the innovative botanical glittering formulations, including the likes of Harrods, Champneys, David Lloyd & One Aldwych. As a leading trainer, Tracey shares her expert tips on what wax to use when.

Strip wax

Strip wax, also known as soft wax or warm wax, is a versatile option for hair removal on larger areas of the body, such as the legs, back, and chest. Strip wax is applied to the skin in a thin layer using a spatula. A cloth or paper strip is then pressed onto the wax and firmly smoothed over the skin. Once the strip has been applied and pressed onto the wax, it is quickly pulled off against the direction of hair growth, removing the wax and hair in one swift motion. Strip wax is ideal for large areas of the body. It is quick and efficient, making it a popular choice in busy salon environments. Strip wax can effectively remove both fine and coarse hair, leaving the skin smooth and hair-free.

Peelable wax

Peelable wax, also known as hard or hot wax, is known for its effectiveness in removing short, coarse hair. Some peelable waxes can be used for the whole body, but they are mainly used on small or sensitive areas such as the face, for intimate waxing and for underarms.

Peelable wax is applied to the skin in a slightly thicker layer than strip wax and applied following the direction of hair growth using a spatula. Unlike strip wax, hot and peelable waxes do not require a cloth or paper strip for removal. They are left to cool and harden before being lifted from the skin, pulling the hair out from the root. Traditional hot waxes normally need to be applied in a figure of 8 or in a thick coat in the opposite direction to the hair growth, and take a little longer to harden than the thinner, softer types of peelable waxes.

Roller wax

Roller wax, also known as cartridge wax or roll-on wax, is a convenient and mess-free option for hair removal. Roller wax is housed in a cartridge with a built-in roller applicator. The wax is dispensed onto the skin in a thin, even layer using the roller. Similar to strip wax, a cloth or paper strip is applied over the wax before being quickly removed against the direction of hair growth. The roller applicator ensures even coverage and minimises mess as there is no spatula involved.

Waxing is a very profitable service to offer in your salon. From a 1kg bag of peelable wax you can get around 8-12 intimate wax treatments depending on the amount of hair you are removing, making the treatment around £1.50 – £2.25 (calculations based on our own Mulberry Peelable Wax). The charge for an intimate wax treatment varies according to where you are in the country but I would say an average of £25-£50 and the treatment takes approximately 20-45 minutes depending on the hair growth and the experience of the waxing therapist.

Training is imperative. There are beginner wax courses for those who haven’t ever waxed before – when looking for a course find out how much actual waxing you will be doing before you get your certificate. It’s important to do as much practical removal as you can to build your confidence. Intimate Waxing is normally a separate course that you take after you have got to grips with waxing the other parts of the body.

We also offer Waxing With Confidence Classes as a finishing course for those who don’t feel confident since training, or have had a break in their career and now feel a little ‘rusty’. We will help you to refine your skills, expand your knowledge, and stay at the forefront of industry trends and innovations.
