Waxing is a service with fantastic profit margins as the cost of materials is negligible, so if you aren’t already offering it, read on for leading trainer Tracey’s expert tips…

Intimate waxing requires specialised training and techniques to ensure safe and effective hair removal whilst minimising discomfort for the client. It is a skill which is best learnt after you have already been waxing for some time and feel confident in your skills. It can be a great and profitable addition to your treatment menu.

Start by enrolling in a reputable waxing course that specifically covers intimate waxing techniques. Look for courses offered by accredited schools and training centres. Make sure that the school that you choose gives you plenty of hands-on experience as this is essential for mastering your techniques and building your confidence. Your course will probably take one day, but you will need to practise on friends and family afterwards until you feel confident enough to start treating your clients.

Once you are trained and feel ready to treat clients, good and effective communication with them is crucial. Explain every step of the treatment and make sure you come across as confident and self-assured so that you put them at ease and they feel like they can trust you.

Intimate waxing can be a vulnerable experience for clients, so it’s important to approach each session with patience, empathy, and understanding. Choose best quality waxes and pre- and post-waxing products specifically formulated for intimate areas to ensure optimal results and minimise irritation. Maintain strict hygiene protocols, including wearing gloves, sanitising equipment, and using disposable applicators to prevent cross-contamination – don’t double-dip your spatulas into the wax! Advise clients to exfoliate the skin gently a day or two before their waxing appointment to help prevent ingrown hairs and prepare the skin for waxing.

Make sure you apply the wax in the direction of hair growth and pull the skin taut before removing the wax – ask the client to help you to stretch the skin wherever possible – stretching the skin and holding it taut are the key to a good intimate wax – this will help to minimise pain and discomfort.

Advise clients to avoid touching or scratching the waxed area immediately after their treatment to prevent irritation or infection.  Recommend the use of a gentle, fragrance-free moisturiser to soothe and hydrate the skin post-waxing. Ingrown hair Serums can be a great addition to your skincare cabinet to prevent and cure ingrown hairs. Encourage your clients to avoid hot baths, saunas, swimming pools, and harsh skincare products for 24-48 hours after waxing to minimise irritation.

Ashmira Botanica offer Waxing With Confidence Classes as a finishing course for those who don’t feel confident since training, or have had a break in their career and now feel a little ‘rusty’, to help refine your skills, expand your knowledge, and stay at the forefront of industry trends and innovations.
