Colour Inspiration: Meet Nikita Fisher, Creative Director at Jamie Stevens Hair

By Nikita Fisher on August 17th, 2019

Nikita Fisher is making a splash in the colour world – she joined Jamie Stevens hair 18 months ago and in that short time has been a finalist for British Colour Technician of the Year, a Colour World Colour Genius Award, and won the London Region of the L’Oreal Colour Trophy. Jamie has spoken about how she has reinvigorated his own creativity – a high compliment from one of the best-known innovators in the industry. Her passion for colour has got us all fired up so we fired off some questions to find out what drives her.

Nikita, tell us about your career to date?

A New Zealand girl born and bred, I left school to start an apprenticeship at 15 and had a passion for anything artistic. I was really lucky that my boss saw something in me and said I’d never want to leave the industry – she was right! She said I’d be able to branch out into fashion, make-up, photoshoots, and I couldn’t wait.

Qualified by 18, I worked there until I was 21 and did a lot of national competitions; I won a huge Wella competition (YPS) and the prize was an amazing month touring round Europe, including a week working in Vidal Sassoon. I fell in love with London, and got an ancestry visa to move here when I was 21 – my birthday party was also my leaving party! I met my husband on my third day in London when I was having my interview at Rush where he also worked.

I started at Oxford Street, where it was super busy and I had a great international clientele but I missed being in a family business so joined Paul Falltrick in Essex, and he got me into show work, playing with wefts, polystyrene and working on photoshoots. My next move was to Cobella where I worked on the business side (management and reception) before becoming head colourist at the Selfridges branch. I looked after a massive international clientele including a lot of ladies from the Middle East who would be looked after in the VIP room. But I found there was quite a language barrier and also a high staff turnover and I wanted to be in a smaller business again, so joined Brooks & Brooks where I stayed for 5 years, got into avant-garde work and really found out who I was as a hairdresser. I started educating and working on lots of shows around Europe, weddings, everything! I then joined Jamie Stevens and I’ve been able to step up my social media presence ad hone my style. I’m all about balance so love working close to my family and not having a long commute into central London. Since joining Jamie I’ve had some amazing opportunities to shoot for BHA, work with celebrities, bloggers and get really creative!

Your Instagram feed is a mix of delicious buttery blondes and brunettes and some really show stopping brights. How would you describe your signature style?

Blondes! Foilyage is one of my favourite techniques, and my clients love to be blonde, most of them are full heads of highlights and dramatic blonde transformations. Hand painting, balayage and foils make up the majority of my work.

Where do you get your inspiration from?

|Honestly everywhere! I just love aesthetically pleasing things, so it might be from nature, the way the light catches something, brights; I’ve included some of my mood boards in my film so you can see the process from image to hair. In terms of my salon vibe, it’s very Ibiza, my signature hair is sun-soaked bikini friendly – I’ve basically created a beach in London! Maybe because I’m from NZ and I love the sea and sun, I’m bringing that to London in hair form…

Who’s your ideal colour client?

Blondes, transformations, and I love a colour correction, I don’t want to just do a tint! I want to add dimension, contrast and I never do the same thing twice on a client – I’m always encouraging them to change it up and evolve, even if it’s just a tweak. I’m really passionate about working with clients to help them to understand the maintenance needed, educating and advising them on their colour.
