Backstage at the BAFTA’s- What it’s like to work on the award show

Philipp, who is a LFW regular heading up the hair teams for designers such as Edeline Lee (as seen on everyone from Kate Middleton to Lily Allen) and Malan Breton (who’s dressed Ariana Grande and Scarlett Johansson to name a few) is the lead hairdresser for the BAFTA TV awards in partnership with Schwarzkopf Professional, leading a team of hairdressers from across the UK creating red carpet hair for some of the biggest talent in UK Television.

We caught up with Philipp to find out what it’s like working on one of the biggest celebrity events of the year…

“We had a very good day backstage at Sea Containers at our hair lounge, and this year we created a lot of messier buns at the BAFTA’s, including for Nicole Corrales, with quite a textured undone feel and some pieces pulled out onto the face which we then tonged a little bit, getting shape and texture into it and leaving softness towards the face. In general, we saw a looser kind of glam on trend at this year’s event; we did a Kendall Jenner inspired wet look on Lou Teasdale which we worked with some movement and texture towards the ends. Using wetter products like gel and a wet hairspray through the roots, we created that height and separation for the front area.

For BAFTA CEO Jane Millichip, who was wearing Joshua Kane, a cool, quite edgy strong outfit, I wanted to get her mid length hair into the middle of her face with the top quiffed away and the sides quite narrow to make it look a bit more punk and get some real strength into it.

David Tennant wanted to keep it quite authentic to his style, he likes to wear his hair blow dried off the face with a bit of volume and pushed to the side with a parting. We worked with some Flex Wax from Schwarzkopf Osis and then to make sure it stayed in place all night we secured it back off the face with some Schwarzkopf Osis Elastic hairspray.

It’s always really fun backstage at the BAFTAs because it’s not just the celebrities that can get their hair done, every nominee gets the chance to book into the styling suite to get pampered on the day. There is a certain amount of pressure of course, but it’s fun to work for an awards party because there’s always high energy from all those nominees; everybody’s excited and a bit nervous so there’s a real buzz being backstage at events like that.

Usually with celebrities for the BAFTAs how we work is over e-mail the agents send references and ideas of the clothes they’re wearing and the hair they like, then we create the style on the day. It’s quite an early red carpet as the event starts in the afternoon, and then the hair team all gets to join the afterparty! Haug London Haus, 19 Rathbone Street, W1T 1NE
