1 Double cleansing is a must
Double-cleansing is the practice of cleansing your face twice, usually in the evening. I use a cream cleanser and then an organic soap, but others might use a micellar water or a balm followed by a water-based, foaming cleanser to clear away any remaining residue or sweat.
But it’s a myth that you need to cleanse twice – cleansing with your usual product once should be enough. However some people who wear makeup and SPF may prefer to double cleanse to completely remove any debris left on the skin.
2 The harder you exfoliate or scrub the better
Many people believe that when they’re using physical exfoliants such as a face scrub or exfoliating gloves to buff away dead skin cells revealing new skin beneath, it’s important to scrub harder and for longer to get the best results. However, they’re doing more harm than good and could be damaging the skin barrier.
3 Greasy food causes break-outs
If you enjoy having chips, fried chicken or burgers now and then, don’t worry – there’s no evidence that eating greasy food causes oily and breakout-prone skin.
In fact, oil on your skin that can lead to acne is a result of genetics and hormones.
Having said that, I always advise my customers to eat home-cooked food as much as possible, and to include fruit and vegetables in their diet to make sure they have all the vitamins and healthy fats needed to nourish their skin from the inside out.
4 You can shrink your pores
Pores are tiny openings in the skin that contain hair follicles and sebaceous glands, which create the oil that keeps our skin soft. Pores can become enlarged thanks to genetics, age, sun exposure and your skin type.
It’s not possible to make pores smaller, but it is possible to minimise the appearance of your pores with a toner or an AHA such as YNNY’s Lactic Acid Exfoliator, which whisks away dead skin cells, dirt and oil that could be making them look larger, giving skin a smoother finish.
5 You need lots of products to have good skin
I always advise opting for quality over quantity when it comes to your skin because you can achieve a clear complexion just by cleansing, using a moisturiser and wearing sunscreen.
However, you can optimise this basic skincare routine with the right products. Consider using multi-purpose moisturisers or serums that contain active ingredients, oils and vitamins to benefit your complexion further but keep the number of bottles in your bathroom cabinet down.
For example our Enhanced Collagen Booster contains moisture-loving hyaluronic acid, vitamin C for glowing skin, and vitamin b3 to smooth, reduce redness and strengthen the skin barrier.
6 You don’t need a face cream over a hyaluronic acid serum
Hyaluronic acid serum, a humectant which pulls moisture into the skin, is usually a water-based product, so it will evaporate quickly. Because of this you will need a face cream or an oil-based serum layered over the top as a moisturiser as a hyaluronic acid serum on its own doesn’t have moisturising properties.
