A consent form is an essential form that protects you if you are performing eyelash and eyebrow tinting. It confirms whether the client has had problems with the products being used in the past and determines whether they have any pre-existing medical conditions.

It also explains the risks, such as an allergic reaction to the products being used or the products getting into the client’s eye, so the client can decide whether to accept these risks.

Finally, it confirms that the client understands that there are certain things that the client needs to do and certain things that the client needs to avoid immediately after the tinting

By getting a consent form completed before every procedure you minimise the chance that you will be found legally liable to pay compensation if anything goes wrong. However, you should still have public liability insurance because the form won’t protect you from every claim.

Public liability insurance

This is a type of insurance that protects you in the event that a compensation claim is made against you by a client who alleges that you are responsible for them being injured.

It’s vital because claims for facial scarring or blindness can easily reach £50,000. Legal fees would push the final cost of the claim even higher. Your liability insurer will also help you handle the claim.

It is important to make sure that your public liability insurance includes two extensions:

Financial loss cover

A standard public liability insurance policy only covers compensation claims that involve injuries or property damage. It will not cover compensation claims for purely economic losses.

This could cause a problem if a situation arose where you were doing the tinting for a model and the colour was wrong. That model wouldn’t be injured but could lose income, or a photographer or film producer could incur additional costs as a result.

The financial loss cover extension adds in cover for purely economic losses so such compensation claims would be covered.

Treatment risk cover

Standard public liability insurance policies exclude cover for compensation claims arising as a result of professional negligence. You should make sure your policy includes a treatment risk cover extension of you could be uninsured in the event of a claim being made against you.
