Public Liability: Protect your dreams and your business
When you run a business, accidents sadly can and do happen. Whether it’s spilling coffee on a client’s phone or burning a hole in their carpet, you need to be covered for the unexpected. Some accidents are simply unavoidable, such as a customer slipping on a spill in your salon, even if there is a ‘wet floor’ sign visible.
These kinds of mishaps are the reason you need public liability insurance. It offers you essential cover against claims made by clients or members of the public for injuries suffered and also for damage to their property due to an accident which you or your business activities have caused. It’s vital that you’re properly protected against these situations that could leave you faced with large claims for compensation and costly legal bills. That’s why public liability insurance is at the heart of all our Salon Gold policies.
What Do You Get With Public Liability?
Whether you work from a salon, clinic, your home, or on a mobile basis, Salon Gold public liability insurance has you covered. And we protect you whether your business is based in the United Kingdom, Channel Islands, or the Isle of Man. Our policy even includes temporary cover (up to 14 days) for those working abroad (excluding the USA and Canada). It also covers accidental damage to the personal belongings of both your employees and clients, as well as compensation for court attendance of up to £250 per day.
Treatment risk cover is also included with your public liability insurance because standard public liability insurance does not actually cover injuries or damage to property caused by your professional services. For this reason, it is essential for those in the hair and beauty industry to have it, in order to avoid a gap in cover. For our clients in the holistic, health, and fitness sectors, our policy provides malpractice insurance cover instead of treatment risk. Malpractice insurance covers claims for bodily injury, mental and psychological damage from physical procedures or from advice, or a combination of both.

Public Liability Insurance FAQs
Public Liability Insurance FAQs
Do I need public liability insurance?
Public liability insurance is vital for mobile hairdressing, beauty and health & fitness businesses – and just as important if you own a hair salon. Anyone who says they were injured or that their property was damaged by you or your staff could decide to sue you for compensation. Even if you know you’re not at fault, without public liability insurance, you could be left with crippling legal fees to try to defend your case. Although it’s not a legal requirement, most business owners see public liability as an essential low-cost safety net.
What does public liability insurance cover?
Public liability insurance protects you against accidental injury to clients or a member of the public, or damage to their property, which occurs as a result of your business activities. If someone brings a claim against you for an injury, public liability insurance would cover financial compensation for suffering and legal fees. Any associated medical expenses would also be considered. In the case of property damage, it would cover the cost of repairs or replacement. Even if you’re not to blame for what you are accused of, public liability insurance would cover your costs.
Do mobile and freelance professionals need public liability insurance?
While there is no legal requirement for freelancers and mobiles to hold public liability insurance, we highly recommend that you do. However careful and professional you are, the unexpected can happen. If you find yourself faced with a claim for injury or damage with no insurance protection, your business may not be able to recover from the costs you would be liable for.
Will I automatically get public liability insurance with a Salon Gold insurance policy?
Here at Salon Gold, we understand the importance to your business of public liability insurance and we include it as standard on all of our insurance policies.
Does public liability insurance protect me if a treatment goes wrong?
Standard public liability insurance doesn’t safeguard you from claims which result from your professional services. If a treatment goes wrong and as a result your client suffers, for example, an allergic reaction, a burn, or other injury, standard public liability insurance wouldn’t usually cover this. However, we include treatment risk or malpractice cover as an extension of our public liability insurance, and this does provide cover for any injuries or damage caused by treatments you carry out.
Am I covered if one of my staff has an accident at work?
If you employ a team of staff, you legally need to hold employers liability insurance, which protects you from any insurance claims your staff may bring against you after being injured at work. This is available as an optional cover on all of Salon Gold’s insurance policies.
Do I need public liability insurance if I work from home?
Even if you’re working from home, there is still a risk that something can go wrong, causing damage to your client or their belongings. We would strongly advise you to take out public liability insurance to protect your business when clients come to you or when you visit them at their premises. You can select the ‘Working From Home Extension’ under our freelance package, which automatically includes public liability insurance for visitors to your home in connection with your business.
What if I have more than one occupation?
When you’re filling out our online quote form, you’re able to select up to three occupations that you want insurance cover for. If you need more than three options, simply get in touch with our team and we can arrange all the cover you need. It is vital that your public liability insurance includes all the business activities you’re involved in, so that there aren’t any gaps in your cover.
How much is public liability insurance?
The cost of your public liability insurance depends on your profession and whether you want to add any optional extra covers. Get a quote online now, with instant cover.
