What Insurance do Fitness Instructors need?

If you’re a fitness instructor, you’ll be dealing with clients on a regular basis. Therefore, it’s essential that you have the correct insurance in place in order to protect you from any costly claims made against you. Claims could arise from third party personal injury, property damage or incorrect advice delivered to a client. Fitness instructors have a duty of care to their clients, and so having a specialist fitness instructor’s insurance policy in place is imperative. The cost of fitness instructor cover is small compared to the potential costs of such a claim being made against you. Fitness instructor’s insurance can also provide you with financial protection if you’re unable to work for a period of time due to injury, illness or because expensive sports equipment is stolen.

Public liability insurance

If you work as a fitness instructor, you’ll need to buy public liability insurance. This will cover you for damages and legal costs that arise as a result of third party bodily injury or third party damage. If a client was injured during a training session, then decided to sue you and you didn’t have public liability insurance in place, you could face steep compensation costs that could end your business and even your career. This type of insurance also provides cover for products sold or supplied to clients and members of the public, including refreshments.

Professional indemnity insurance

Professional indemnity insurance covers advice that you give to clients. Clients who follow your advice and resultantly develop injuries (over a period of time, rather than suddenly), may decide to sue you, but professional indemnity will cover your legal fees as well as any compensation costs.

Personal accident insurance

These types of fitness instructor’s insurance cover against accident or injury and the potential repercussions to your business. Some instructors don’t think to insure themselves, but it’s important to remember that your body isn’t invincible. You never know when you may become injured whilst at work. If this happens and you’re injured badly enough that you’re unable to work and earn money for a period of time, compensation payments from could help to relieve the financial burden or help pay for essential medical treatments, such as psychotherapy.

Sports equipment

Sports equipment insurance for fitness instructors provides cover in the event of loss, damage or theft of equipment used directly by you or your clients in the day to day operation of your business. Sports equipment is often very difficult to track down if stolen or lost, which means that missing items are very rarely recovered. If you use a lot of expensive equipment for your business, this type of cover could be a very worthwhile investment. Whether your equipment is used and stored inside or outside of your home or business premises, suitable cover exists.
