4 ways to turn your passion for fitness into a career

Many people treat their jobs as a means to get an income. Although getting paid is obviously important, some of us are just not satisfied with that — we want to use our career as an outlet for passion. And if the first thing you do when you get out of bed is a morning yoga flow, all you think about is getting some movement in, and you make sure to reach those 10k steps every day, it’s safe to say you’re probably passionate about fitness. Luckily, there are many careers that can turn this fervour into work, depending on what you want to focus on. Let’s explore a few of them.

1. Become a personal trainer

Perhaps the most obvious choice for a fitness enthusiast is to go down the personal training career path. However, in order to become a personal trainer, though, you need to be certified. Then, you can choose whether you’d rather work at a gym, become a freelancer, or be self-employed. Bear in mind that each path offers different perks. For example, working in a gym will require you to follow the gym schedules, while being self-employed means you’ll be working for yourself, choosing the clients you want to teach, and setting your own working hours.

And you don’t even need to look like a stereotypical personal trainer, which can conjure up images of bulging muscles. You’ll be happy to know that anyone (with the right qualifications) can become a successful trainer. As long as you have good communication skills, an abundant knowledge of training and genuine passion for your craft, you can provide amazing value to clients.

2. Create a health and fitness blog

If you want to channel your passion into the widest audience you can get, creating health and fitness content might be the best call for you. First, you’ll need to identify what kind of content you want to create. Do you want to set up a blog on your own website? Start a YouTube channel? Become an Insta or TikTok fitness-guru? Every platform has its own benefits and disadvantages — for example, on YouTube you can focus on long-form videos, show the world what you eat and how you train in a day, or create workout programmes people can watch. Meanwhile, Instagram is better for creating snappy content that’s easy to digest and visually appealing.

A blog, on the other hand, will give you more freedom to decide what format you want to indulge in. Of course, they’re not mutually exclusive. In fact, it’s even encouraged that you set up profiles on all social media platforms when you start a blog. Just make sure you have a specific niche and audience in mind. It might take a while to get your blog off the ground and make it into a career, but if you produce free, valuable material that shares your knowledge and expertise, it’s just a matter of time. Once you start growing a following, there are a few ways you can monetise your expertise. You could collaborate with brands to create quality and informative content, or use the credibility you’ve gained by selling your own training and nutrition programmes for interested followers. Either way, you need to ensure that your unpaid content is still your focus, because otherwise, you won’t be able to maintain your brand.

3. Start working as a health coach

If you’re an all-rounded kind of person, you may opt for a more holistic kind of career. Health coaching, as opposed to personal training, encompasses not just workouts but also nutrition. As a coaching role, you’ll be focused on helping your clients achieve their goals, helping them identify and correct their routines for better health. What’s more, you could give talks, run retreats, and write books and articles on issues relating to fitness and nutrition. Rather than training your clients, you’ll help them create beneficial, sustainable healthy routines.

4. Train to be a PE teacher

As a fitness fanatic, you know that healthy habits start young. So what’s better than to influence the generation of tomorrow when they’re still children? Becoming a physical education (PE) teacher is perfect for someone who wants to actively make a difference. The rewards are massive — you get to inspire young people to become fitter and healthier, and you’re also probably going to be the coolest teacher in the school. 

However, being a PE teacher, like any other teaching position, requires holding the right qualifications and background checks. As a teacher, you’ll have a regular salary and, therefore, a steady income, which cannot be said for working as a freelancer.
