Working in the health and fitness industry naturally means you’ll be working closely with clients and members of the public. Having the right cover in place is vital to protect yourself if you’re faced with a client who suffers an injury as a result of a service or advice that you offer them and then decides to sue you for compensation.
Dependable insurance doesn’t have to break the bank. Our Fitness Gold policy (one of the Salon Gold family of policies) offers a selected package of covers to protect you against the risks you face in the course of running your health or fitness business. You can rest assured that it provides full liability cover and you’ll be surprised how affordable it is.
Brought to you by Fitness Gold, our insurance scheme specially for Fitness professionals.
With Fitness Gold, we also offer some optional covers that you might wish to add to your policy. These include employers liability insurance, which is a legal obligation if you employ staff in your health or fitness business. You may also choose to add personal accident cover, or stock and equipment cover. You can add any extra covers that you want, but you don’t end up paying for covers you don’t need.
As a general rule, employers should have insurance that covers all their members of staff, so if you’re working for a professional health and fitness establishment, such as a gym, then check that this is the case and you shouldn’t need to take out additional insurance yourself.
However, if you’re self-employed, or if you’re employed but you do extra freelance work, then you will need to hold your own insurance policy.
At Salon Gold, we include Public Liability, Product Liability, and Professional Treatment Risk Liability as standard covers, up to a maximum of £5 million. Our affordable rates mean that you can easily protect yourself from a huge range of issues which could leave you and your business exposed to substantial claims and hefty legal costs.
Use our easy online quote tool to build the insurance policy that’s just right for you. Quick, simple and you’ll be covered instantly!*This price is for a £3m public, products and professional treatment risk liability cover (up to £5m available) and £10k financial loss cover for a sole trader. Health & Fitness Insurance FAQs
Health & Fitness Insurance FAQs
What insurance do I need to run a fitness class?
Fitness professionals who regularly lead classes will need to hold Public Liability Insurance and Teacher Liability Insurance. Both of these provide cover in the event that your instructions lead to someone in your class sustaining an injury. This also covers you for any damages to property, whether made by you or your client.
Do personal trainers need insurance?
If you’re offering personal training through your workplace, you should be covered under the insurance policy of the club or gym you work for. However, you must confirm this before you start working there to ensure you understand the extent to which their policy protects you. If you’re offering a freelance service to clients, you will need to sort out your own insurance.
How much is insurance for a gym?
Organising insurance for your gym is crucial to do before you open your doors to the public as you need to make sure you’re suitably covered from the get-go. The cost of your insurance depends solely on the cover you opt for when putting your policy together. If our automatic cover isn’t extensive enough for your needs, explore the optional covers we offer, which can be added to your policy, and will affect the final price.
How much is insurance for health & fitness instructors?
The cost of your insurance depends solely on the cover you want. Our standard health & fitness insurance policy starts at £49.80 per year, and includes Public Liability, Products Liability, Professional Treatment Risk Liability cover as standard. However, you can include additional, optional cover, such as Teacher Training Insurance, for an additional fee. Contact our team to learn more.
Do personal trainers need professional indemnity insurance?
Giving advice to clients is part and parcel of being a personal trainer. However, as well-meaning as your advice is, if it doesn’t work for your client, you could be liable to pay for any accidental damage it causes. Professional indemnity insurance protects you against any claims of this nature.
When will my health and fitness insurance start?
When you take an insurance policy out with Salon Gold, you’re covered as soon as your purchase goes through. You don’t have to wait around for any paperwork, as you’ll be covered instantly.
Do I need insurance to run a bootcamp?
Personal trainers are generally covered under the gym’s insurance, so if you’re training clients outside of a gym, you will need to have insurance to cover your classes. This includes Public Liability, Teacher Liability, Professional Treatment Risk, and if you supply the equipment, you may want to protect that with a Stock/Equipment policy.
Do I need insurance if I work in a gym?
You should be covered by the gym’s insurance if you’re employed there as a personal trainer. However, it’s always best to check the gym’s insurance policy with your employer to decide if it’s enough for you. In some cases, you may want to take out your own, private policy for your own peace of mind. It’s also worth noting that you will only be covered by your gym’s insurance for any claims that happen on their premises. For example, if an accident occurs during a private PT session outside of the gym, your workplace insurance won’t cover it.
Can I be sued as a personal trainer?
If your clients sustain an injury during your class or after following your advice, they could have reasonable ground to file a claim against you. Even though not all injuries of this nature are caused through negligence, you will still be held liable. This is why it’s best to have insurance in place to financially protect you from any accidents.
"Will qualifications affect my insurance?"

Here at Salon Gold, we know that there is often a lot of uncertainty over what qualifications you’ll need to be covered, so we’ve compiled all the information you’ll need to know in this handy guide
