Which type of Salon Gold policy do I need?

What insurance do mobile hairdressers need?

As a mobile hairdresser working in clients’ homes with chemical hairdressing products and sharp tools, you need to protect yourself and your business against possible compensation claims if something accidentally goes wrong.

Public liability insurance

Hairdressers public liability insurance is a key part of your policy. It protects you in the event of accidental injury to a client or member of the public caused by you or your business. It includes damage to a client’s possessions or property. But there are other covers that are also essential in mobile or freelance hairdressing work.

Other covers you really need

  • Hairdressing treatment risk. This protects you against claims for any injury or illness caused to a client as a result of a listed treatment that you carry out. So if a client suffers a burn or a reaction to a product such as a bleach or colour, you’d be covered. It is extremely important to note that this is a different cover from public liability and it is vital for a mobile hairdresser to have it.
  • Product liability. This steps in if a product that you supply to a client is faulty and injures them or damages their property.
  • Employers liability insurance is almost always required by law if you have any employees.

Covers you can add

These include money cover, stock/equipment cover, legal expenses, personal accident and financial loss cover. They are covers that you generally pay extra for if you want to add them. However, Salon Gold gives you financial loss cover automatically at no additional cost.

Freelance & mobile insurance automatic covers

Public Liability

Public Liability

Public liability insurance covers accidental bodily injury by you or your business and also covers third party property damage (damage to posessions or property belonging to a client or member of the public while you are practicing).

Our freelance and mobile policy provides:

Products Liability

Products Liability

If you supply a faulty product to a customer that causes an injury or damages their property, they may try to sue you. Even if you have not been negligent, you may still be held liable for damages and injuries suffered as a result of products that you use or supply.

Our freelance and mobile policy provides:

Treatment Risk

Treatment Risk

This protects you against claims for injury or damage caused by the treatments you carry out. So if somebody suffers a reaction to a treatment you have carried out, you may be liable to pay compensation and this is where insurance cover is vital.

Our freelance and mobile policy provides:

Financial Loss

Financial Loss

The public liability section of your policy will provide cover for third party injury and property damage caused by your negligence. But what if a client suffered a financial loss not caused by injury or property damage? Not a problem, we have included a valuable extension in our policies to ensure you are fully protected.

Also known as the Non–Injury Treatment Extension, your Salon Gold freelance policy will automatically provide cover if a client or member of the public suffers a financial loss as a result of work or a treatment carried out by you in connection with your business.

So for example, a client has a reaction to a treatment which did not cause an injury but turns their hair green or discolours their skin and they are unable to work as a result. They may not accept your offer of a refund and may not want you to rectify the damage. Instead, they may make a claim against you for their lost earnings. If the client’s loss of earnings was a direct result of your professional negligence, this extension will provide cover for you.

The standard limit under the policy is £10,000 but can be increased to £50,000 for an additional premium. There is a £1,000 excess (or 10% of the claim, whichever is greater) in respect of this cover.

Mobile Hairdresser Insurance FAQs

Do mobile hairdressers need insurance?

Public liability and treatment risk liability insurance is essential for any mobile hairdresser. Without this cover you would be liable to pay compensation claims if a customer were to be injured during the course of a treatment. Claims for injuries such as a reaction to a hair colour treatment can cost thousands. Mobile hairdressers may also choose to protect their stock and equipment from damage or theft.

What insurance does a mobile hairdresser need?

A mobile hairdresser would benefit from a number of different insurance covers including:

  • Public liability insurance
  • Treatment risk liability insurance
  • Products liability insurance
  • Stock & Equipment cover
  • Legal expenses insurance
  • Personal accident insurance

Why do hairdressers need insurance?

Hairdressers need insurance to protect them against any claims for compensation made against them. Without insurance, the hairdresser would be liable to pay compensation if a client were to suffer a reaction to a colour treatment for example. Hairdressers can also take out cover for their stock and equipment and other insurances but public liability and treatment risk liability is the most important cover for a hairdresser.
