What is the purpose of a beauty therapist? Don’t undervalue your skills!

Katie Godfrey is the entrepreneur behind the KG brand, and single-handedly built her empire from a single salon bought aged 19 as a school leaver with no qualifications, to a chain of salons, a UK-wide beauty training academy, an eyelash product range and a salon coaching business. In addition to maintaining the salon and pro businesses, Katie is a dedicated business mentor and looks after over 35 salons. I’m sat here reflecting on the year so far. This time last year we were just re-opening our doors before we had to close again. This year I have just had 6 weeks off for the summer holidays with my little girl. I’m so blessed that I’ve been able to create a business that works around my childcare needs and gives me freedom. I just love being able to teach other salon owners and businesses this as well. But, just because I’ve been able to have this time off, it doesn’t mean we haven’t had it tough. Since the dreaded Covid19, everyone – including myself – is still trying to bounce back. To gain old clients back, get our regular clients up to the average spend which it used to be, not battling with self-isolation and clients having to cancel last minute. During lockdown, I wrote down some thoughts that I felt were important for us all to remember. Keep strong, keep going and you WILL come out on top! I’m just a beauty therapist…… No, I’m more than that. I’m a counsellor, a listener, a supporter. A shoulder to cry on. That person you tell that you’ve just got engaged and we talk about your plans every other week till the day I pamper you for the biggest day of your life. I’m the person you tell before anyone else about your latest match on tinder and planning your first date. I’m the person who knows you’re down from the second you walk in and know it’s okay to just be present in your treatment. I’m the person who gives you a hug when you’ve had an argument with your husband and tell you it’s going to be ok. I’m the person you tell when you’ve found a lump and you’re not sure what is it. I’m the person that gives you strength when you’re going through cancer treatment. I’m one of the first people you tell that you’re pregnant before your first scan. I’m the person that sees your baby grow up through the years, and the first to ever paint their nails. I’m the person that cries with you when you lose a loved one. We are so much more than just a “beauty therapist”, or just a “lash artist”, “makeup artist”, or just a “nail tech.” We are huge people in our clients’ lives. Remember that, and value what you do.
