holistic counsellors insurance

What is Holistic Counselling Insurance?

Holistic counselling insurance is a package of insurance covers designed to insure holistic counsellors against the range of risks that they face. These risks can lead to unexpected losses so it is important that counsellors protect themselves via a holistic insurance package.

The package can be tailored to meet the specific needs of each holistic counsellor. The covers available are:

Property insurance

Your business property is at risk of accidental damage or losses due to theft and property insurance covers any such losses. You can cover your buildings and their contents, as well as any equipment that you need to take away from your business premises, for instance, if you provide counselling at your clients’ own premises.

Employer’s Liability Insurance

This type of insurance is a legal requirement if you employ anyone and there are severe penalties if you are caught operating without it.

It covers you if a compensation claim is made against you by an employee who claims that something you did or failed to do has resulted in them being injured. As well as paying any compensation awarded, it also covers any associated costs and legal fees.

Your employer’s liability insurer will also handle any compensation claims which are made against you so you don’t need to worry about dealing with complex legal arguments.

Public liability insurance

Public liability insurance is similar to employer’s liability insurance but it covers compensation claims made against you by third parties such as your clients or members of the public. Like employer’s liability insurance it also covers any associated costs and legal fees, and your insurer will handle any compensation claims made against you.

Unlike employer’s liability insurance, it’s not a legal requirement to have public liability insurance, although as compensation claims for serious injuries can cost over £250,000, it would be unwise to operate without it.

Medical malpractice insurance

Public liability insurance covers you if a compensation claim is made against you due to something you’ve done, such as leaving your briefcase somewhere that someone could trip over it. It also covers you if a compensation claim is made against you due to something you’ve failed to do, such as someone slipping on a wet surface because you’ve not used a warning sign to tell them the floor had recently been mopped.

It doesn’t cover you if someone suffers a loss due to your professional negligence, though, because claims arising out of professional activities are excluded. To cover these claims you need medical malpractice insurance.

Like employer’s liability insurance and public liability insurance, as well as paying any compensation awarded this type of insurance also pays any associated costs and legal fees. Your medical malpractice insurer will also handle the claim on your behalf.

Legal expenses insurance

Becoming involved in legal action is costly as the legal fees soon mount up. In addition, dealing with legal issues can be a bit of a minefield. Legal expenses covers your legal fees and your legal expenses insurer help you deal with the legal action.

It covers a wide range of different types of legal action, including:

  • Criminal charges
  • Disputes with clients or neighbours
  • Employment tribunals
  • Tax/VAT inspections

Personal accident & sickness insurance

If you can’t work because you’re injured or ill, you might not be able to cover your monthly bills. Personal accident and sickness insurance covers your lost income in such a situation.

A weekly benefit is paid if you are temporarily incapacitated. If your incapacitation will be permanent, a lump sum is payable instead. A lump sum is also payable in the event of your death or if you have a specific injury such as the loss of a limb or an eye.
