As they do every year, Pantone, the global colour specialists, have announced their 2018 Colour of The Year. It’s bold, yet mysterious and ultra-sultry. It’s also been described as futuristic and enigmatic – introducing Ultra Violet. The colour that will be taking over 2018.
Obviously, as it’s officially the trendiest colour of the entire year, the hair and beauty industry have a lot to play with when it comes to this unconventional and multi-dimensional colour of choice. So, it’s really no surprise that the best of the best in hair styling have already started to play with the ideas of Ultra Violet hair and it’s many cosmic-esque looks.
@kittylahairstylist : My top client request: @pantone color of the year: #ultraviolethair There’s no color that compares to the quality, longevity, shine, pigmentation or price point of @iroirocolors ! Custom “dark mermaid shadow roots” (I bleached the whole damn thing) 2 sessions for full head Root created with custom color mix base mix of: Iro black, iro purple, iro pink Into iro purple, iro plum, iro pink
Luckily for us, Ultra Violet contains a mixture of brighter and darker hues, which means that the biggest colour trend of the year is available to all colour palettes and not just for blondes.
With its announcement, Pantone describes the colour as “a dramatically provocative and thoughtful purple shade…(which communicates) originality, ingenuity and visionary thinking that points us towards the future”. As the trend aims to capture originality itself, extra personal creativity is going to be essential when trying this hair colour out for ourselves.
We’ve seen purple hair hit the scene in the past – think music legend, Prince or Katy Perry, circa 2015. It’s always been a passing celeb look, left mainly to punk rockers or die-hard colour-seekers. However, this year Ultra Violet is hitting the mainstream and we’ll be seeing it at the local corner shop or at the pub on a Friday evening in no time.
Opt for bold all-over colour to really hit the ground running with this trend, or to ease your way in slightly, why not try an Ultra-Violet balayage?
The lower maintenance look is sure to capture the imagination of both hair experimenters and stylists alike and it is certainly one that has us tempted. Leaving darker, brunette roots natural, the hair is bleached and painted with the Ultra-Violet colour from the mid lengths to the ends of the hair. Completely saturating the tips of the hair ensures the pop of colour is bold and bright and undeniably, on-trend.
For a hint of the trendy shade, try some bold flashes of colour, through a deeper all-over base colour. Adding a touch of Ultra-Violet to the ends of shorter layers allows for a suggestion of the palette, without a top-to-bottom commitment. This look also gives your hair depth and dimension, letting it catch the light and adding movement to your ‘do.
Rebel Circus, an alternative fashion and lifestyle brand posted this amazing Ultra-Violet inspiration pic. With the trend of the year colour splashed through the mid-section of the hair, the futuristic look is heightened with bold, hot pink roots and tips. This is certainly a look for the confident folk.
So, will you be hopping onto the trend train and trying out this brand new, stand-out hair colour? We can very much imagine some coordinating hair and nail looks hitting Instagram in the near future and we can’t promise that we won’t be taking part too.
