It’s been said that 2018 is going to be the year of hair trends and it has definitely kicked off with a great one. Whilst we’ve spent quite some time now wondering if we can carry off bright and bold rainbow hair or even a highlighter-pink look, have no fear, the newest colour trend to sweep Instagram is slightly more achievable for you and me.

Colour is staying on trend, but the hottest hair colour trend right now is a slightly toned-down version of the ever-so-loved rainbow ‘do. It’s a softer approach, using beautiful pastel palettes, but is non-the-less the prettiest thing on Instagram at the moment.

Envisage cascading Hollywood curls, sweeping each corner with luxurious pastel pinks and spring-loving lilacs. You can even spot a flash of blue or green within some of the creations we’ve seen on the social media platform so far this year.

This is opal hair. Coined by Seattle salon, Ross Michaels, the look was created by colouring the whole hair pearl (a soft, near grey) and then applying stunning, chunky highlighted sections with the pastel colours of our dreams. This is a look for blondes, (sorry guys!) and looks the most divine when styled with a 40’s Hollywood glam, set-curl.

Some variations of the look are more single-shaded, using almost peach tones and then creating the opal effect more prominently at the root with a deeper shade. Others lean closer to rainbow, using upwards of five colours to create these unique looks.

With a nod to the silver blonde hair trend of 2017 and bringing it forward into this year, this version of opal hair has a silver base running throughout. The crown is brightened with a pop of candy floss pink, but the silver frames the face and jawline and is more prominent than the colour towards the ends, giving it an old-school, metallic feel.

The look can also work stunningly on a cropped bob style. The edgy cut adds some fashion-forward vibes to the colour palette. This look, posted by Feel Unique, keeps much of the blonde within the base colour, which in turn adds a slight warmth to the overall effect.

Long Island hair stylist, Julia of @jemmhair created a slightly darker and edgier version of the trend with this look.  Keeping the base colour a deeper grey and then adding the pastel, chunky highlights on top, creates this deeper, but overtly ashy, variation of the colour trend. Her caption states that she used a staggering seven colour bowls to create this look, but we think it’s definitely worth the extra effort.

So, would you be brave enough to try the hottest colour trend of the moment this year? If you’re a blonde in waiting, searching for a new idea to try, this is the one for you. Colour isn’t going anywhere and what says you’re ready for spring better than a full head of pastel prettiness? And for all you stylists out there, you might need to grab a couple of extra colour bowls for this one – we think it’s going to be huge this year!
