From the noughties unapologetic ‘glitter lip’, to the infamous gothic pout – we’ve witnessed our fair share of iconic lip-wear throughout the decades. And whilst some of our tints have stood the test of time, others have been given a little 2017 spruce up. So, whether you’re lusting for that perfect shade, or simply feeling a little nostalgic, draw some inspo from these cult-classics of the lipstick world:
First up, a timeless staple of lip art: the famed gothic pout. Of course, we saw plenty of vampy browns, black cherries and deep-set burgundy shades in this season’s Milan runway – statement lips were teamed with virtually no eye make-up, assuming the central feature of the look. Originally inspired by 90’s grunge make-up, darker lip tints effortlessly combine striking with sophisticated. So for those who aren’t quite ready to embrace summer yet, liven even the simplest of looks with this luxe lip-colour.
Matte browns, satin-sheen roses and plush peaches – as far as the science of make-up goes, you can virtually never go wrong with a nude. In line with minimalism make-up trends, they can help to offset a bold eye, or achieve a healthy, fresh-faced look. Wearable by both day and night– neutral colouring is officially your longest standing best friend.
Following this year’s SAG awards, the likes of Chrissy Tiegen and Sophie Turner very much proved the red lip has made its comeback. But forget the high-gloss, crimson tones, dominating our makeup bags since the 2000s – this iconic shade has been given a revamp. Matte orangey-red hues have replaced the classic rouge lippy. Flattering a variety of complexions, it’s a perfectly pretty upgrade for your summertime pout.
The cosmic cousin of natural looking nudes, say hello to the ‘greige’ trend. After 2017’s widely popular ‘granny chic’ hair takeover, our lip stains have followed suit. Subtle tans and beige shades are blended with mixed grey tones, creating the ultimate edgy nude. The alternative to a classic – it’s a sure way to achieve a statement pout this season.
Glitter lips – it brings to mind crimped hair, combats and experimental neons, just about acceptable in the noughties. But following the lead of pioneering make-up artist Pat McGrath, a sparkly pout is no longer a fashion faux-paux of our teenage hey-days. Channelling all things retro, lips are adorned with a glitter topcoat, creating a textured, dimensional finish. Perfect party time wear – it’s the millennial throwback we’ve all been waiting for!
