Hairdressing is a very intimate profession in many ways. Running your fingers through ultimately a stranger’s hair while chatting with them about life and families, sometimes for hours and hours, gets you up close and personal, unlike many other jobs. Unfortunately, not every client calls in straight from the bathtub and we’ve found some pretty scary horror stories that are sure to make you cringe.
Take a look at the tales of some of these hairdressers on Reddit and count yourself lucky if you’ve never had the experience yourself!
Is it a cliché to assume teenage boys are just a little bit shower-apposed? Well, possibly. However, one hairstylist found out the hard way what it’s like to attempt a cut on dirty teenage hair. After doing a dry cut for “a teenager that hadn’t washed his hair in what looked like months”, they said:
“After his cut, I tried to wet his hair in the shampoo bowl and the water just ran off his hair because of all the oil build-up.”
Surely that’s enough to put anyone off having a “cut before wash” policy at their salon!
One Reddit user’s husband experienced an unpleasant situation when beginning to style his client’s dreadlocks. She told readers:
“He parted his dreads, looked at his scalp and noticed it was green! He touched it and saw it ripple. Asked the guy when he’d last washed his hair, he replied ‘about 3 years ago!’. My husband realised the guy’s whole scalp was covered in a layer of pus! Sent him straight to A&E to have it drained and treated with antibiotics.”
Luckily this stylist sent his client straight for treatment on his infected scalp!
Creepy crawley hell
From nits to bad cases of dandruff, there are a few scalp issues that hairdressers who cut kids hair will face on occasion. However, arguably the worst possible scalp infestation happened to this Reddit user’s sister, who wasn’t warned of the situation from their client’s parent until after the cut was finished. She said:
“My sister is a hairstylist and got scabies once from a kid. Apparently, the mom knew the kid had it too, just didn’t tell my sister until they were leaving. Yuck.”
This incredibly infectious problem, consisting of under-skin bugs, is certainly a scary one to handle.
Ever fancied trying out an Amy Winehouse-style beehive? This Reddit user has a story about her hairdresser mother that may just make you change your mind:
“My mother was a hairdresser in the 1960s for Vidal Sassoon during the time of the beehive. Customers wouldn’t wash their hair for weeks, they’d just keep spraying it to keep it in place as it was such a complicated do. This meant a LOT of fleas, lice, and on one occasion cockroaches that had to be washed out.”
If the hairstyle of the season means cockroaches in our ‘do, you can count us out!
The smell of grease
When this Reddit user’s model didn’t turn up to class, she was forced to borrow a friend from her mentor to work on. Unfortunately, this friend had a pretty stinky hair problem that was now the problem of our Reddit hairdresser:
“Apparently, this young lady had not washed her hair in what I’m assuming was weeks because her hair was so greasy that every time I touched her hair my hand came back drenched in grease. And the smell, oh man I’ll never forget that smell. It was the worst thing I’ve ever had the displeasure of working with.”
Whether you’ve found these stories funny or gag-worthy, we think it’s definitely enough to feel grateful towards all your loyal (and clean!) clients, who don’t bring these kinds of issues into the salon. From lice to severe scalp psoriasis, some hair issues just need to be dealt with outside of the salon, before attempting a weekend curly blow.
