It’s arrived; the dark and dismal weather is finally starting to disperse and we’re starting to see our first proper glimpses of what spring/summer has in store for us. And that’s where our new favourite hair trend comes in. We’ve already seen some pretty colourful hair trends so far in 2018, but the latest on the horizon promises gorgeous crystal colours, reminiscent of the geode hair trend last year. That’s right everybody; we’re talking about gem roots, the latest pastel hair colour we’re dying to try.
First spotted by Allure, the trend finds its origins in the work of Las Vegas-based hairstylist, Chita Beseau’s, Instagram. A beautiful blend of pastels and more muted tones, she used the rainbow roots technique to achieve this colour-popping ‘do. The technique involved painting every shade of the rainbow onto just the roots of the client’s hair, creating this sultry gradient effect.
Going against the norm, Beseau opted for only soft, pastel colours in hues of mint green, baby pink and lavender for her interpretation of the technique, to keep the look in line with the shades found in geodes. In her interview with Allure, she told them that she chose those colours specifically to pay tribute to “spiritual stones” and opted for a rich purple to layer over the roots in order to re-create the depth seen in geodes and other mineral rocks. The result was this multi-dimensional hair colour that just screams spring.
And the really nice thing about gem roots? Because it’s only applied to the roots of the hair, it’s an easy way to try out pastel hair without going the whole way and, once the colour fades, you can easily transition back to your natural hair colour without too much fuss. Because of how easy it is to achieve, we definitely think this one’s going to be a winner over spring/summer 2018.
